World Health Day falls on 7 April 2022 and the theme this year is Our Planet, Our Health.
The construction industry is one of the world’s largest consumers of energy and raw materials as it takes a considerable amount of resources – from water and electricity to steel and concrete – to build our homes, offices and the surrounding infrastructure.
People often talk about the environment and cost benefits that come with adopting green practices, but did you know that sustainable construction has a positive impact on the health and well-being of those who spend time in such green buildings?
Did you know?
- People who live and work in developments that are designed around natural lighting and outdoor views reported improved morale and better productivity. A joint study by the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, Syracruse University Center of Excellence and SUNY Upstate Medical School found that employees who work in green, well-ventilated offices recorded a whopping 101% increase in cognitive function!
- People who sent time in buildings which were constructed with low Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) materials fell sick less
- While another study found that those who worked in buildings that let in plenty of natural sunlight reported having longer, better quality sleep at night and were less likely to experience feelings of depression and stress.
- Companies with offices in green buildings reported lower absenteeism, staff turnover and medical costs.
Are you surprised to find that sustainable building practices play such an integral role in the creation of thriving communities?
